A Beginner's Telescope

As an astronomy outreach community we get an inquiry almost every week asking about what's a good starting telescope (mostly parents asking for their kids). It thrills us when we see people interested in purchasing their first telescope to marvel at the beauty of the night skies, and of course hopeful that they will share the views with others. There are a lot of telescopes out there and not all of them may be suitable for a beginner or your budget, so we'll try to point out what you should look for in a telescope to make it a worthwhile investment. Here's the thing – telescopes are scientific instruments. If you're only thinking of casual observing then your natural tendency is to stay away from pricey telescopes. And who wouldn't?! Telescopes are really expensive! Even members of the local astronomical community have to search every time we think of purchasing new equipment. MSA Cast & Crew: Arnel Campos

Manila Street Astronomers Arnel Campos with his wife Michelle help MSA reach out to people located south of Metro Manila. Arnel is an astrophotographer and amateur astronomer with interests in general astronomy and astronomy documentaries (especially the ones hosted by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson & Prof. Brian Cox). He is a graphic designer and runs a printing press business in Cavite. Arnel usually volunteers for MSA events in Cavite and Laguna, in locations such as SM Dasmariñas and at the Paseo de Sta Rosa. Wearing his signature hat, Arnel is also known as the "Astro Cowboy" of the Astronomical League of the Philippines, a local astrophotography group. You, too, can be a volunteer astronomer. Join us!
